Abstract

Kyeong HwangboBy focusing on the central issues of immigration and cross-cultural passage, this paper aims to analyze the interstitial plight of Asian-Americans portrayed in Chang-rae Lee's novel Native Speaker. Analyzing the dynamics of the immigrant family in terms of an inverted Oedipal drama helps to shed light on how the precarious subject position of Asian-Americans as inside-outsiders triggers a distorted assimilative desire. The relationship between the novel's protagonist Henry Park and his immigrant father becomes complicated and distorted, for the immigrant father lacks the authority typically associated with the parental disciplinary power and thus feels deposed and inadequate. Thus, Henry's moving away from his Korean family and ancestry coincides with his moving toward the symbolic paternal force or figures who will help his initiation into the national narrative of citizenship. The socializing move of the minority subject toward the sphere of the national symbolic is an insidious type of oedipalization in that it often involves suppressing and excising his racial, cultural, and other material differences that exceed the generic notion of the nationalist subject. In what might be termed his Freudian "family romance," Henry embraces and performs his role of an "obedient, soft-spoken son" of America both professionally and personally. As well as serving a white mainstream society as an espionage, he marries Lelia, the "standard bearer" of WASP stock and has an assimilative hope for Mitt, his biracial son. Yet Henry's involvement with Kwang, a Korean-American politician, whose mortifying debacle Henry witnesses, ultimately serves to lay bare the ominous dark forces that drive minority subjects to a state of self-beguiling impersonation and subservience in their futile, unrequited romance with America.
