초록
This paper examines the restoration of the name (of the Father) in Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, the contemporary rewriting of Alice by Lewis Carroll. Even though two texts share a lot of events and characters such as fantastic other worlds, lost identities, talking cats, and queer mothers, their attitudes toward the paternal order are ultimately contrary. While Alice, where everything including the heroine girl Alice metamorphoses and celebrates the otherness of difference, challenges the false authority of patriarch like Father William, Coraline pursues to follow the ‘recipes’ of the father, establishing the identity/name of the wise girl Coraline. To successfully return from the uncanny other world and enter into the (symbolic) reality, Coraline should defeat the monstrous other mother with button eyes who threatens the formation of her normative (gender) identity. Unlike the chaotic adventures of Alice which subverts the rigid Victorian norms and conventions, Coraline’s exploration of the m/other world (re)constructs the phallogocularcentric order of the father.
