초록

In his novel Divisadero, Michael Ondaatje portrays a nomadic existence and its ideology which gypsies, hippies, and displaced people of his story embody as a way of life. Through the motif of “borders” and “division,” which the novel’s title, ‘Divisadero,’ connotes, Ondaatje expands his on-going thoughts on transnationalism and nomadism. Jacques Derrida's idea of ‘absolute hospitality’ in Of Hospitality serves as an analytical framework. As Derrida recognizes the stranger as a potential rebel who will eventually rebel against the authority of the host, this paper analyzes the tragic incidence which occurred on the farm in Petaluma in comparison with the tragedy of Oedipus Rex. Witnessing the circumstances of failed, treacherous hospitality as Ondaatje’s characters exemplify, the reader is invited to ask: “What are the contingencies of hospitality which can, at any time, turn into hostility?” This paper explores answers by examining Ondaatje’s characters caught up in the ethical dilemma of hospitality and hostility.
