초록

This paper examines the contemporary feminist rewriting of the Cinderella story, Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine. While Perrault’s and Brothers Grimm’s versions of Cinderella were designed to give moral lessons for docile women in the patriarchal society, Ella Enchanted, published in the era of third-wave feminism, celebrates the independent and empowered girl heroine Ella. In the classic versions, the name Cinderella meant an abject scullery maid who would be rescued by a Prince Charming. The enchanted heroine—once named Cinders—in Ella Enchanted, however, resists the curse of obedience, breaks the spell, and declares herself as an independent subject, Ella. Revising the classic fairy tale, Levine’s text not only creates a newly empowered heroine in children’s literature but also shows the context where the recent girlhood discourses such as girl power develop and unfold.
