초록

Still Alice and Elizabeth is Missing are dementia driven narratives in which the protagonists are not only Alzheimer’s patients but are also agents who lead the narrative. The neuro-novel, Still Alice incorporates current and detailed medical knowledge as it introduces Alice fighting against her own Alzheimer’s disease and social stigmatization. Elizabeth is Missing dramatizes Mode’s loss of memory, the typical symptom of dementia, as a major motif of the mystery story, thus defamiliarizing the usual plot of the detective story. Despite different ways of dealing with dementia, the authors implicitly attempt to find ‘self’ which remains in dementia patients and thereby re-imagine the social stigmatization against dementia which stereotypes both the symptoms and patients as living funerals, zombies, and living corpses. Alice claims that she is more than what she can memorize and express. Mode’s broken memory turns out to be the key to solve a 70 year old murder case. Ironically, this novel proves that even the broken memory of an Alzheimer’s patient can be a liberative power for the individual. The message of these two novels can be a criticism of the logocentricism which places human value squarely on language, cognition, and memory.
