Abstract

Throughout her life Welty has refused to be named a feminist. Welty, however, deals with women's experiences and problems in her texts. She rewrites male writers' canonical texts most consciously, while subverting them. Her rewriting male texts is one of the journeys taken to find her own voice as an artist who is interested in recovering unheard voices of women as others in her text. I think Bakhtinian dialogism is one way to look at her journeys and to understand her text more discerningly because Bakhtinian dialogism deals with the continuous dialogues among texts and it also is concerned with the voices that are buried and not heard.Welty's The Golden Apples artistically presents the struggle and tension to get the hidden voices of women heard, which are coerced to be silenced in the traditional patriarchal Southern community. In The Golden Apples nature plays a crucial role for the voices of women to get heard. Nature is more like a facilitator that helps the voices of women be found and heard.I explore how Welty weaves her intertextuality with male canonical texts to let the voices of unconventional women who are interrelated with nature be heard. Welty rewrites male narratives such as rape narrative to redefine women as speaking subjects as well as to hear their voices. Also, the polyphonic characteristics in The Golden Apples are examined to hear the voices of others. There are many unmerged voices and consciousnesses without the author's control in the text. Unconventional women artists are illuminated through many perspectives.
