Abstract

Woman remains an unforgettable other to William Faulkner, haunting his literary career and driving his aesthetic passion for creation. Faulkner's If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem contains his unique and radical perspective on woman in a peculiar narrative form. The novel as a divided work, I argue, suggests a new possibility of femininity by embodying the surplus lack that is neither a transcendental substance nor a cultural product. The novel presents the two contrasting modes of womanhood, the masculine woman in "The Wild Palms" and the feminine woman in "Old Man"; in so doing, it examines the possibilities and limits of womanhood, and creates a new mode of femininity beyond the realm of masculine logic by incorporating it into the unique form of a split text. The split in the novel, in other words, does not produce a dialectical synthesis of the two but rather, in the very tension of gaps, bears an incessant impulse to create another possibility of woman beyond the two. It is a supplementary surplus that enables an endless creation, not the complementary other as in synthesis. The structural excess presents itself in both narratives as the gaze that a character encounters at an unexpected moment and the narrative voice that cuts into the natural flow of narration. The heterogeneous gaze and voice open up a new life and narration, and their potential for creation is in principle limitless. The creativity that the form of the novel implicates has to do with the feminine jouissance in its Lacanian sense.
