Abstract
This study analyzes three poems written by Lee, Yong-ak after his defection to North Korea: ‘빛나는 한나절’, ‘열 살도 채 되기 전에’, and ‘봄의 속삭임’. These poems were published in “조선문학” in January and April of 1960 but were not included in The Selected Poems of Lee, Yong-ak. Despite their historical significance, these works have yet to receive extensive scholarly attention. Written after the 1957 publication of The Selected Poems of Lee Yong-ak, these poems address the issue of the repatriation of Korean residents in Japan, which became a prominent topic in North Korea from 1958 onward. Lee Yong-ak’s approach to this subject differs from that of other poets. His decision to produce three works on the same theme and publish them in two separate instances marks a notable departure from his previous publication patterns. To understand this shift, Chapter 2 examines the historical and political background of the “Repatriation Project for Koreans in Japan,” highlighting the influence of North Korean literary policies in promoting this initiative. This chapter also analyzes the literary trends of the late 1950s concerning this theme and examines the structural characteristics of these poems. Many works from this period adhered strictly to state literary policies, often exhibiting schematic tendencies, with recurring imagery and similar poetic structures. This tendency contradicted North Korea’s broader efforts to overcome schematic and documentary approaches in literature. Chapter 3 compares Lee Yong-ak’s poems with other works on the same subject, identifying his unique poetic characteristics. Unlike the formulaic and documentary style of many contemporary works, Lee Yong-ak’s poems maintain strong lyricism. Before Even Turning Ten and The Whisper of Spring, in particular, showcase his signature poetic techniques, including narrative elements, character references, and temporal shifts between past and present. These aspects reflect his creative style prior to his defection. Lee Yong-ak’s decision to publish three poems on this topic—despite not having previously produced multiple works on the same subject after his defection—suggests both an alignment with North Korean literary policies and a personal influence. His own experiences, including his time as a dock laborer during his studies in Japan, likely shaped his engagement with this theme.
