Abstract

The aim of this article is to ascertain that jangdan (rhythmic cycle, literally means 'long' and 'short') of the 15th centuries' music under the reign of the King Sejong is related to that of folk music in the present day. Sejongshillok, the Sejong Chronicles, compiled in 1454 informs us that the music at that time was used for rites that were practised in ceremonies in the court. As its method the jangdan of the 15th century is compressed in order to be seen easily and then this is to compare with that of the current folk music. Ratios of the rhythm of 'long' and 'short' of jangdan is extended as in 2:1 to 3:2 to 5:3 to 8:5. The Jeoninja jangdan appeared in the manuscript of Sejongshillok is identified with the structure of the jangdan shown in the current jung- jungmori. The Chwihwapyeong jangdan is related to the jangdan of hwimori, jajinmori, danmori and taryeong. The Hyumyeong jangdan is also linked to jungjungmori of the current music. It is interesting that such jangdans of the 15th century court music are still remained in those of the contemporary folk music. It is hoped that this article will help readers understand better those of music that the King Sejong established in 1491.
