초록
Christopher in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon has been noted mainly for his autistic behavior. For this reason, most of criticism on the novel has socio-linguistically, psycho-behaviorally, or neuro-biologically delved in his unsocial mental functioning underlying his cognitive literalism. This criticism assumes Christopher is a non-adaptive person resisting any interpersonal relationship. Departing from the view of Christopher as a socially un-interactive person, this essay focuses on his cognitive-affective development from the perspective of narrative therapy. A main argument is, in this essay, that the detective story Christopher is writing in the novel is a process of changing—i.e. reauthoring—his dominant story, which is his own and his family’s narrative defining his character in a particular way, from a story centered on his behavioral problems into a story oriented towards his more socially adapted state. Changing of his dominant story is generated in the process of objectifying his behavioral problems in order to meet others’ emotional needs in a better way.
Abstract
Christopher in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon has been noted mainly for his autistic behavior. For this reason, most of criticism on the novel has socio-linguistically, psycho-behaviorally, or neuro-biologically delved in his unsocial mental functioning underlying his cognitive literalism.
