초록

This paper investigates how Joyce Carol Oates’s 1966 short story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?,” takes on a dramatic portrayal of the familiar yet implosive reality of a nuclear family in the United States in the 1950s, whose domestic order is at risk of being affected—hybridized, transgressed, and compromised—by the presence of something exotic and foreign that unexpectedly yet fatefully arrives at its doorstep. It, thus, examines how this realistic yet supernatural text serves as a point of literary reference to the American 1950s, to the extent that the Cold War-oriented social ethos of a homebound familial ideology in an era of containment, affluence, and conformity came to incubate its rebellious potentials realized in the 1960s, a decade of resistance, diversity, and subversion.
