Revisiting J. J. Rousseau’s Opera <Le Devin du village>: Regarding Its Position in French Opera History

Rousseau, a writer and philosopher who made significant influence in the development of Enlightenment and provided philosophical foundation to French Revolution, was a musician who invented new music notation system, wrote articles in the music part of Encyclopédie, and played a crucial role in the center of famous Querelle des Bouffons. Among his musical works, an opera Le Devin du village, a love story between a shepherd (Colin) and a shepherdess (Colette), is his representative work reflecting his music philosophy. But Le Devin du village has been treated improperly, just as a first opéra comique work musically amateurish and unskilled. In this paper, I revisited the value and position of Le Devin du village in French opera history. For this purpose, firstly I identified two common mistakes or misunderstandings on Le Devin du village found in previous researches. Secondly I researched the uniqueness of Le Devin du village systematically through music analysis of the work.
