초록
Chester Himes’ Harlem Cycle, the series of Black detective fiction comprising nine novels, made him one of the most prominent Black writers in the U. S. His representation of Black riots in the series, however, has been criticized as a sensational display of violence for a popular market. Focusing on Himes’ Blind Man with a Pistol, this paper intends to verify the validity of the criticism regarding Himes’ representation of Black riots. Examining the cause of Black rioting, its development, and various attitudes and responses toward it, this paper argues that his representation of Black riots in Harlem Cycle is not for commercial purpose. Rather, Himes reveals the economic inequality and the resulting poverty of Black people as the root of Black riots and exposes the police brutality found in suppressing the Black protesters. This paper concludes that Himes uses violence as a device to stress the urgent need for racial negotiation to prevent the transformation of Black riots into a race war. His representation of genocide in the last novel of Harlem Cycle is a stern warning to the possible future of racial apocalypse.

His representation of Black riots in the series, however, has been criticized as a sensational display of violence for a popular market.
