초록
In Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the themes of food and hunger are intertwined with the ways in which power operates and is resisted within the dystopian society of Panem. In The Hunger Games, the residents of District 12 demonstrate creativity by foraging for ingredients in forbidden areas, trading in black markets, and expressing empathy through the act of sharing food. On the other hand, in The Ballad, the prequel of the trilogy, the act of gifting food is associated with a desire for control over others. By emphasizing the spectators' enjoyment of entertainment centered around the suffering of others, the narrative highlights a disconnection in empathy between the game players and the audience who also endure the hunger of war. Yet the final scene, which suggests that Lucy's resistance might persist, serves as a point of connection between this novel and The Hunger Games. That in The Hunger Games the gifting of food helps to spark the flames of revolution reveals the unintended subversive effects that begins to surface 64 years later.
