Abstract

Objectives:The corpus callosum(CC) is the major commissure connecting both cerebral hemispheres. Relatively few studies have explored atrophy of the CC in mild cognitive impairment(MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease(AD). This study aimed to compare the atrophy of MCI with that of AD. Methods:Fourty one subjects with MCI, 34 with AD were investigated using magnetic resonance imaging. In the midsagittal slice the CC was traced manually. Anatomical measurements were conducted on a PC workstation using the semi-automated software Scion Image for Windows Scion Corporation, INC. We used adjusted callosal measures(raw measures divided by midsagittal intracranial area, multiplied by 100) in all analyses. Results:Total callosal area was significantly reduced in patients with AD when compared with subjects with MCI. Comparison of the subregion of the CC showed significant smaller CC1, CC2 and CC5 in patients with AD relative to subjects with MCI. Conclusion:We found significant regional atrophy of the CC predominantly in the callosal rostrum and splenium in AD when compared with MCI.
