Abstract
The Baroque movement is well-known for showing a very broad spectrum in its period and characteristics. As can be seen from its etymology, which means a pearl in the state of a rough stone, Baroque is characterized by irregularities that go against harmonious reason or balanced and logical reason. In this paper, we try to find a new horizon of research by substituting Baroque elements in a universal and broad sense to the works of François Mauriac. François Mauriac is often known as a master of traditional psychological novels and a writer characterized by conservative religiosity. For this reason, many people think that Mauriac’s literary world is generally characterized by classicism emphasizing harmony, rules, order and so on. However, the works written by Mauriac are actually far from these characteristics. Mauriac’s work can be said to be a Baroque world where light and darkness, grace and sin, life and death, happiness and sorrow, master and slave, ostentation and powerlessness coexist. In Mauriac’s works, characters who suffer from the lack and helplessness of finite creatures under the fetters of original sin often appear. They are portrayed as independent and rebellious people who deviate from order, rules, groups, and universality. They show a divisive appearance in which they are captivated by sentiments and at the same time condemn themselves through reason. Sometimes they endure inner conflicts as independent ones standing alone before God. They are ambivalent human beings who alternate between the happiness of life(Carpe diem) and the mortality of death(Memento mori), where hot and cold, positive and negative coexist. Mauriac’s literary world which pursues a dialectical transition from darkness to light, from sin to grace, and from death to life shows the details of the various characteristics of the Baroque character. These Baroque characteristics of the characters are also essential elements that enable the transition, that is, a leap from low to high.
