Abstract

This paper focuses on the following three facts observed in Achebe’s novel ‘Things Fall Apart’. First, the proverbs in the novel concurrently capture sub-themes in a complementary relationship - for example, the key sub-theme of Theme1 Okonkwo ‘challenges to destiny’ and the key sub-theme of Theme2 Traditional Value ‘self-reliance’. Second, the dual meanings of proverbs are deeply involved in this process, and one of the ways to realize this duality is the modification of the generic situation of proverbs. Third, proverbs deliver the sub-themes while also serving the indispensable devices of modern fiction such as character depiction, psychological reversals of the protagonist, conflicts, and foreshadowing. To sum up, the proverbs in ‘Things Fall Apart’. are not stylistic elements, nor are they incidental to add exotic sentiments to the text. The proverbs in Achebe’s novel are the essential elements responsible for the development of the plot and the plot’s construction.
