2020년 들어 한국연극계에는 ‘연극의 기원’의 문제가 중요한 화두로 부상하고 있다. 코로나19의 팬데믹 현상 속에서 그 어느 때보다도 공연예술 환경이 위축되고 위협받고 있는상황 속에서 문화체육관광부는 “연극계 새 판 짠다”는 키치프레이즈를 내걸고 향후 연극계의 새로운 도약을 위한 총체적인 모색의 기회를 갖고자 올해를 ‘2020연극의 해’로 선포하였다. “향후 바뀌어야 할 연극예술의 방향과 공연계 패러다임 변화”를 위한 총체적인 모색을 위해 올 한 해 동안 담론과 실천, 모두를 포괄하여 14개 사업이 진행되는 가운데 학술 담론의 차원에서는 ‘한국연극사 다시 읽기’가 핵심 의제로 설정되면서 ‘연극의 기원’ 문제가 다시금 뜨거운 화제로 떠올랐다. 본 논문은 ‘한국연극사 다시 읽기’의 의제 하에 진행된 컨퍼런스에서 다루어진 논제 중 특히 ‘연극의 기원’의 문제를 재론해 보고자 한다. 연극의 기원과 관련하여 제의기원론은 한국연극사 담론에서 가장 폭넓게 수용되어 온 담론이다. 헌데 이번 학술대회에 발표자로 나선 김 용수는 자신의 발제문, 「한국 연극에서의정전적 접근과 문화 권력」을 통해 연극의 제의기원론이 허구적인 상상력의 소산에 불과하다는 주장과 함께 제의기원론을 ‘맹종’하는 한국연극사 담론의 무지함을 질타하고 그것이한국연극계에 끼친 부정적 영향에 대해 논하였다. 본 논문은 김용수의 발제문에서 보여준주장이 과연 어느 정도 타당성을 지니는지 검토해 보았다. 나아가, 연극의 기원의 문제를보다 객관적으로 접근할 수 있는 길이 과연 어떻게 가능할지에 관하여 탐구하였다.
Abstract
In the pandemic of Corona 19, the performing arts environment is shrinking more than ever. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism declared this year as ‘2020 Theater Year’ in order to have an opportunity to seek a new way to the theatre and to instill new vitality in the theater world.The executive committee of the “2020 Theater Year” is carrying out 14 projects to “change the direction of theatrical arts and the paradigm of the performing arts that must change in the future,” and in terms of academic discourse, “rereading Korean theater history” was set as the core agenda.In that context, the issue of “the origin of the theater” emerged as a hot topic again.This thesis intends to reexamine the issue of “the origin of the theater” among the topics dealt with at the conference held under the agenda of “Rereading Korean Theater History”. Regarding the origin of the play, the theory of ritual origin is the most widely accepted discourse in the discourse dealing with the history of Korean theater. However, Kim Yong-soo, who came to this conference as a presenter, argued that through his presentation, ``Canonical Approach and Cultural Power in Korean Theater,’’ the theory of the ritual origine of the theatre was nothing more than a product of a fictional imagination, not supported by any historical facts. He criticized the ignorance of Korean theater historians who “blinded” the theory of ritual origin and discussed the negative effects it had on the Korean theater world.This thesis intends to examine to what extent the arguments presented in Kim Yong-soo’s presentation are truly valid. This thesis explores also how it is possible to approach the origin of the play more objectively.
