Abstract
Marcel Proust practiced literary critique his whole life by publishing numerous articles, pastiches, book reviews and prefaces on diverse journals and magazines. In this study we choose to analyze three texts spreading over a period ranging from his mid-twenties to the year before his own death. If the review on Henri de Régnier’s volume of poetry, Tel qu’en songe shows Proust’s early preference for instinct rather than intelligence, the preface of his unaccomplished literary critique, Contre Sainte-Beuve contains his belief in involuntary memory as the sole and unique substance for his future novel. His preface on Paul Morand’s short stories, Tendre stocks that Proust published when he almost finished the writing of In Search of Lost Time displays clearly the author’s idea on the role that a writer’s style should play by being the proper mark of each original writer. Our effort to discover how the ideals and principles revealed in those texts find implications on fictive characters and situations in In Search of Lost Time will help us understand the process Proust went through in order to transform himself from literary critic to novelist.
