Abstract

This paper focuses on the excessive sympathy shown by the narrators towards ‘Francesca’ from Canto V of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno and ‘Dido’ from Geoffrey Chaucer’s two works, The House of Fame and The Legend of Good Women. By examining the keywords, ‘pity’ and ‘judgement’, it aims to analyze the similarities and differences between the two narrators. The episode of Francesca and Paolo in Dante’s Inferno has garnered significant attention due to Dante’s interest and emotional involvement. Dante’s excessive emotional immersion in Francesca serves as a device that reveals his ambition as a poet who transcends previous traditions while facilitating the path towards judgment. Chaucer develops his depiction of Dido’s folly and excessive emotions from The House of Fame to The Legend of Good Women. The difference in poetic technique between the two works can be seen as a point where Chaucer is revealing his position in the literary tradition of his time and his aspirations as a poet, while also using emotion more powerfully as a tool to prompt a response from the reader.
