This thesis is to define the process of forming of desire and gender identity of women after the war by examining the aspects of clothing appeared in 『Free madam』. For that purpose, the landscape of fashion industry in the 1950s and social and cultural discourses surrounding women's fashion and the role of clothing in the novel as a spatial element are investigated. Freedom of Oh Sunyoung in 『Free madam』is associated with her progress from home into a public area represented by 'Paris trading company' and change of her clothing such as velvet (birodeu) skirt and jacket and nylon skirt and jacket. And she dominates males by using beautiful Korean dancing dress and sexuality represented by the dancing dress as a mask. The dancing dress is a symbol of her challenge to the public opinion and expression of active sexuality, which is a threat to the traditional hierarchies of gender or patriarchal order. But conservative nationalism, trying to reestablish itself by restoring anti-communism and tradition in the course of postwar reconstruction and modernization, oppresses and controls women's clothing in the excuse of discipline against luxury and indulgence. The aspects of clothing appeared in 『Free madam』is a language which shows space of gender and a symbol that shows complexity of modernity.
