도손의 『버찌가 익을 무렵』고찰‒사실의 변용과 프루스트적 글쓰기‒

Abstract

This study investigated 『When the Cherries Ripe』 by Toson Shimazaki. This writing is an extraordinary work which started in Paris in 1913 and continued writing when the writer returned back home in 1915. Toson wrote 『Cherry』 when he was commissioned to write a novel for adolescents but stopped writing after the second series. Then, he wrote a completely new story when he returned to France. This study paid attention on the fact that a deep sense of gloom of Toson is depicted in ‘fear’ and ‘depression’ in 『When the Cherries Ripe』. This bildungsroman is reproducing the adolescent period of Toson almost realistically, and Shigeko in the early part of the story is a fictitious character. This work uses a writing pattern of a writer at the age of 40 reminiscing about his adolescence but contains the voice of an established writer who is confronted with crisis. Komako is reflected in a female character named Shigeko, and the writer is skillfully substituting it as a sex problem that an adolescent boy goes through. This study considered it as a ‘transformation of the fact.’ Also, this study considered that the writing has used ‘writing of Proust’ because it reenacted memory of the past in a way of ‘stream of consciousness.’
