Abstract
The sentences that the second person pronoun(‘You’) is used in the novels are still strange for many readers. Nevertheless, the second person narration is used in many novels, because it leaves a strong impression on the readers. In the majority of cases, the second person narration is chosen by the writers who have specific purpose. For this reason, backgrounds of a lot of novels that second person narration is used have specific social and cultural situations. Actually, among the novels that second person narration is used, there are many novels that materials of the novels are state crime such as 5․18. In the novel titled as The Boy Is coming, the dead and the survivor from the tragedy are expressed ‘You’ and ‘I’. Many ‘I’s(survivors) call the other dead people as ‘You’ in the novel. This naming works as a sign which shows that the incidents of the past are still connected to the present. The other novel is Lim Chulwoo’s One Hundred Years Inn. In this novel, ‘You’ is the one of the main characters who is a writer that seems like a real writer, Lim Chulwoo. The second person narrations like “You heard strange sound and went to the island” in the novel are similar to the construction of imperative sentences, because they all use the second person pronoun, ‘You’ as subject of the sentences. Thus, in the novel, ‘You’ is an object who was commended from somebody like God. This means that writing the novels on tragedy such as 5․18 is God’s commands or writer’s natural responsibility, not the writer’s easy choice. The last novel is Choi Yoon’s “There is falling a petal silently.” In this novel, ‘You’ is the reader. Thus, in this case, the second person narration is used for requesting that readers should remember the historical event and empathize the injury from that event. In other words, strategy of narration for reader’s empathy to the story is the second person narration. To sum up, the reason why many novels remember and empathize pathological phenomena of our society use second person narration is that the feature is effective to emphasizes the relationship and communication with ‘I’ and ‘You’.
