‘황진이’ 담론의 형성 방식과 여성의 재현

Abstract

The descriptive records related to Hwangjini are very suspicious of being fabricated. Thus, the descriptive records on her will be the significant text for examining the method that a woman is formed as an "image" or a "symbol" and meaning in the man-oriented history. This paper examined how the "Hwangjini" discourse was formed on the basis of the descriptive records on Hwangjini from unofficial historical tales in the Joseon dynasty to 1930s from the female representation point of view. At first, how her story was deployed and the characteristics of peculiarity and rumor types as the source of retaliatory imagination were examined. The next issue was how her image finally converged into respectability was related to sexuality of women and the mores of the gentry in that day. Finally, this paper went over the patterns that Hwangjini was more ideally diverged into the cultural icon in the Joseon Dynasty before the Japanese imperialism, the seeker and enthusiastic and romantic incarnation of love in the modern age. As a result of examination, it was found that she lost the physical property and became the altruistic existence formed by men. Accordingly, it was concluded that the causes of Confucian tradition in the Joseon dynasty had still enforce its influence on controlling the sexuality of the modern women. Furthermore, this paper observed an aspect of description on women becoming altruistic by men.
