Abstract
This study paid attention to frequent use of an acoustic image within the darkness which is often found from Kim Hyunseung’s poetries. The acoustic sense from his poetries is the sense mainly made from the darkness where the light disappeared, and from here, the poetic narrator sees the new world. The anguish of the poet Kim comes from a desire to hear ‘God’s disembodied words heard from an unknown place’ as a creation of God, or despair from this hearing or wants to substitute this to the poetic spirit of ‘loneliness’. The fact to focus concerning such is that senses of ‘brightness’ and ‘darkness’ are consistently maintaining antagonistic relationship despite of his poetic changes, and the dark world accompanies the acoustic sense. From the middle period poetries, the ‘bright eyes’ are going blind in the darkness, but newly opens up with the ‘ears’. It tries to hear God’s disembodied words with these ‘newly opened’ ears. At this time, the darkness is created as bright ‘light’ is unlimitedly overflowing, and a world where ‘light’ has disappeared as time passes by. Anyway, the poet tries and even confesses the communion with god in this darkness. However, in the end period of poetries when he left the God, the characteristics of darkness or acoustic senses become different. First of all, he intentionally resists God’s disembodied words. From here, he sometimes lights the darkness through his own poetries and his painful poetries make own reverberation. But the acoustic sense became metastasized to the tactile senses as overcoming the darkness where new eyes could be opened. In the end, he is devoted to God while his poetries could not glimmer nor reverberate. His end period poetries recover a relationship with God, and desire for religious salvation within harmonic interaction of light and dark. From his poetries,‘light’ and ‘dark’ collided each other and became the ‘one big music’ to sing incompleteness of human presence.
