Abstract

The study in terms of feminist geography and aimed at to see the relationship between violence against women. For this purpose, in Cho Kyung-ran’s novel “The French Optical Shop,” “As Strange as Heaven” and Ha Sung-ran’s novel “The Bad Dream” and “The Baby Fingers,” I analyzed the gendering implications of the space where female violence occurs, and looked at how the differences in understanding the space caused by the gender relate to violence against women. Space has the characteristics of a social spatiality where are condensed various social relationships, including genders, classes, and races, and this makes it political and ideological. The difference in the perception of the space is not just a difference of experience, but the difference in political and ideological components inherent in the society. For this reason, it is an important task of our time to focus on the political nature and ideology of society through the phenomena that took place there, rather than simply looking at space as a physical construct. First, I looked at the workplace to reveal the relevance of violence women to the gender implication. Next, I looked at the taxi which is public space along with the difference in the perception of space. Finally, I looked at home, which was generally perceived as a place of protection, a place of comfort, through a difference between genders in spatial understanding. Due to hierarchical order in the public domain, we could find the difference in the perception of the workplace. This difference in perception also contributes to violence against women, which has been perpetrated mainly by those who do not consider women to be coworkers and think of women as sexual objects. Nextly, public space can be a place of fear and fear for women, unlike men who freely use public places and enjoy freedom of passage. The fear and anxiety felt by women taking late-night taxis was created by women’s prior experience, which showed that events in society were perceived as direct and indirect experiences for women, making a difference in perception of public space. And we can see that violence in the public space is also the root of our society’s wrong sense of sexuality, which sees women as sexual objects. Finally, the domestic violence against women makes them realize that home is never a safe place and rather a place of violence. Violence against women in home occurred mostly in the absence of male guardians, in which case, the absence of guardians means the public use of possession to intruders. Just as the perception of space can be approached as a matter of violence against women, violence against women can reduce violence against women from a more fundamental problem.
