Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the academic value of Gujinzi, Tongjiazi and Yitizi in Chinese linguistics. Gujinzi is a kind of different character format for the same vocabulary according to the timing of use. This concept of Gujinzi emerged early in the process of Han dynasty researchers interpreting ancient characters as those used at that time. Gujinzi played a very important role in the formation of Chinese characters in the stage of continuous vocabulary formation and continuous change of characters since the language was written. And Tongjiazi and Yitizi are associated with Gujinzi. Sometimes, however, they played their role independently in the process of changing and developing the Chinese character. As a result, Gujinzi, which appeared to understand the meaning of the characters, directly affected the derivation and differentiation of Chinese characters. These Gujinzi have some intersections or similar parts with the linguistic concepts of Tongjiazi and Yitizi. Therefore, it is essential to understand each individual function and clearly distinguish it from each other in order to understand the process of Chinese character derivation. In conclusion, Gujinzi, Tongjiazi and Yitizi each have independent linguistic features. At the same time, there are parts that are organically connected to each other.
