Abstract

In Thailand, Japanese retailers began to make full-scale inroads into the country in the mid-1980s, starting with the entry of Daimaru Department Store in 1964. However, after the 1997 Asian currency crisis, European retailers were making significant inroads into Thailand as Japanese retailers began to withdraw from the market one after another. Despite this situation, Japanese retailers such as Takashimaya in department stores, Aeon and Fuji in supermarkets (SM), and 7-Eleven, Family Mart, and Lawson in convenience stores (CVS) are still expanding their businesses. In terms of the structure of competition among retail formats in Thailand, Japanese CVSs are overwhelmingly dominant among these three formats. Considering the above, the purpose of this study is to examine the expansion and advantage of Japanese retailers in Thailand through an analysis of the structure of retail formats. Specifically, based on the analytical framework of this study, this paper examines (1) why Japanese department stores and SM are in an inferior position in Thailand, and (2) why Japanese CVS are in a superior position in Thailand. Based on the analytical framework of this study, it is considered that Japanese department stores and SMs are in an inferior position in Thailand because they have adopted a “standardization strategy” that introduces Japanese methods without modification or a “integration strategy” that makes slight modifications. In this case, it can be said that they were unable to adopt a “creative and continuous local adaptation strategy” to meet the institutional and environmental conditions unique to Thailand. On the other hand, Japanese CVSs have been able to gain an advantage in Thailand because of their “creative and continuous local adaptation strategy,” which creates new value by adapting to the unique characteristics of the Thailand retail market.
