Abstract
This paper aims to reconsider the meaning of femininity as a narrative strategy represented in The Famine of the City. Written by Park Wan-suh, this serialized popular novel critically examines the rapidly changing social atmosphere and the false consciousness of the middle class in the 1970s. The conflict between traditional and modern ways of thinking, arising from the female characters' false consciousness and newly acquired class status, needs to be newly examined, not only to reconsider the consciousness of the public but also to reevaluate the author’s perspective on femininity. This is portrayed in the form of criticism against the snobbishness and false consciousness of the newly emerging middle-class at the time. Among the characters, The Famine of the City is also the growth narrative of Su-yeon, who drives the narrative development. It is understood as a narrative of a subjective attempt to confirm and break free from one's identity. Su-yeon’s deviant actions to escape the curse of being “bound to another’s skin,” formed by birth, are depicted as malicious and self-destructive. Simultaneously, the domestic boundaries from which Su-yeon cannot escape are an extension of the distorted patriarchy newly established by post-war mothers. This study aims to explore how the pre-modern patriarchal image, combined with the middle-class consciousness of the 1970s, reveals a deeply rooted structure where the female head of the family cannot ultimately fail. It is represented as an attempt to reclaim the lost role of the family head from outside, a transformation of the past feudal system of concubinage, and as an inevitably doomed image of the feminine head of the household. At the same time, a comparison is made between Sun-jeong, who represents the role of the common people in The Famine of the City, reaching marriage, and Su-yeon’s choice to live a rural life with Gu Joo-hyun. This aims to understand the ethical meaning of actions crossing the illusion experienced in the process of reaching the true meaning of feminine life and subjective status, and to reconsider the meaning of the subjective actions the author intended to convey.
