Abstract

Within the great variety of practical texts, the current article identifies the press release as a text 'provided to the media by various groups, public organizations, and individuals with the purpose of disseminating information through the media.'It analyzes the formal and content-related traits of these texts, and based on the results of this analysis presents appropriate models for press releases. The article maps out the characteristics of several actual press releases in terms of their form and content, and suggests ways of revising problematic areas therein. Press releases are categorized in terms of both content and form. With respect to content, the pertinent categories are: public releases of information, publicity, and statements of position. In terms of their formal traits, they can be either stand-alone or appending texts, and either formal or informal. In addition to the above analysis, the present article demonstrates how press releases are composed of an introduction, main body, and appendix, and presents a detailed discussion of each part.
