의료 대화에 나타난 완화를 위한 담화 전략

본고는 의료 대화를 대상으로 삼아 문맥과 화맥 층위에서 완화의 효과를 실현하는 담화 전략을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 기존 연구가 완화의 범위를 문장 내부의 특정한 어휘·문법 요소나 구성에 한정하였다면, 이 연구는 그보다 넓은 담화 차원에서 어떠한 전략이 사용될 수 있는지를 검토하고자 하였다. 이 연구에서는 다음과 같은 전략을 확인할 수 있다. (1) 기존의 화제가 상호작용의 요소들 중 어느 하나(화자 자신, 청자, 그 밖의 대화 참여자, 상호작용의 목적 등)에 위협적인 경우, 새로운 화제로 전환함으로써 위협을 완화할 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 아울러, 이러한 과정을 명시하기 위해서 화자가 화제 전환 표지를 도입할 수도 있음을 보였다(2) 농담의 프레임을 도입함으로써 화맥으로부터 이탈하는 경우를 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이는 의료 대화의 세팅과 비대칭적인 참여자 관계에 따른 위협을 완화하기 위해서 농담을 도입할 수 있다는것이다. 이러한 과정을 명시하기 위해서 화자는 언어적 ‧ 비언어적 맥락화 단서를 수반할 수 있음을 보였다. 본고는 규범적이고 원형적인 텍스트 분석보다는 보다 미시적이고 질적인 분석을 통해 연구를 수행하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 따라서 기존의 완화와 헤지에 대한 연구가 탈맥락화된 텍스트 중심적 표현에 집중하는 경향을 보였다면, 본고는 대화 참여자들이 맥락과 상호작용하면서 적절한 문맥과 화맥을 생산해내는 창조적 주체로서의 측면을 더욱 강조하였다.
Abstract
This article is concerned with mitigation by discourse strategies in medical communication. In contrast to the previous studies focusing on lexical and grammatical items within a sentence, this study investigates how the discourse could be formed in order to avoid incurring unnecessary risks. Two different strategies are examined: (1) Mitigation on co-text is operated by digressing from a threatening topic. (2) Mitigation on context is operated by invoking a joking frame. In these processes, speakers can signal their intention by adding a topic digression marker or a contextualization cue. The current study can serve as an evidence to support the importance of topic digression and frame shift during the interaction.
