Abstract

This paper aims to examine spatial structures of production organization of auto parts industries in Koreaafter Financial Crisis and investigate its significant factors that have been influenced to reinforce competitiveness in itsindustrial sector. This paper also discusses of spatial restructuring and network development of auto parts industriesthat has been closely related with the production system changes and the production organization of car assemblers. The strategic cooperation and collaboration with the foreign firms invested in Korea are also recognized as a key issueto explore the research objectives. From theses research topics, for the dispersion process, suppliers are prefer tolocate southern Seoul Metropolitan Area (Hwasung and Pyongtaek in Kyonggi area) and northern Chungcheongprovince (Asan, Cheonan, Cheongwon, Jincheon etc.) The primary factors that conduct the dispersion process arecustomer diversification, and modularization. Especially, assembler’s functional differentiation between R&D andproduction takes effect on supplier’s location (ex. Hyundai-Kia’ suppliers). In addition this paper also found that thesuburbanization and the spatial change of industrial structure in SMA are also strongly related the suppliers’ locationaldispersion. From the discussion, in fact, it can be inferred that the locational change of suppliers is prominent intraditional industrial concentration region such as Seoul, Incheon, Bucheon, Ansan and Siheung.
