초록
Telecommunications are a recent invention, product of industrial revolution, modernity, and electronicsrevolution. Electronics allowed information to be disembodied, telecommunications detached from transportation. However, as a field of geographic inquiry, telecommunications and their technologies have been the subject of fitfulattention on the part of urban geography. Telecommunications are seen to be challenging both our traditional ideasconcerning mass communications and forms of communications. For geographers most importantly, it is argued thattelecommunications are transforming space-time relations and creating new social spaces based on the urban spaces. On the basis of the importance and necessity of study on telecommunications above mentioned, this paper reviews thetheoretical perspectives surrounding telecommunications and the interrelations between telecommunications andgeographic structures such as global service economy, finance, Internet, global cities, offshore banking, global backoffices, and telecommuting from several analytical perspectives.
