Abstract

This study statistically analyzes the ellipsis and contraction of Korean spoken particles on the basis of discourse corpus and contrasts this analysis with the one of Korean written particles. Spoken particles have a tendency to omit in contrast with written particles. But special particles which realize specific meaning are not generally omitted in both the spoken and written language. Also, there are extensive phonemic contractions between preceding nouns and particles in spoken language compared with written language. Besides, spoken particles show these phenomena such as attaching special particle, realization of dialects, phoneme variation, honorific's absence. From many respects, written grammar is different from spoken grammar which is manifested itself in actual spoken corpus, but current orthography and the regulation of standard language mainly consist of written language, so they never show the vocabulary and grammar of spoken language. Therefore, this study aims at clarifying the distinction between written grammar and spoken grammar and making best use of this distinction in the unification of Korean grammar such as the revision of orthography and the regulation of standard language. Moreover these efforts will offer right basic materials which describe the characteristics of spoken language in terms of the description of Korean grammar.
