내러티브 탐구의 존재론적, 방법론적, 인식론적 입장과 탐구과정에 대한 이해

본 글에서 필자는 클랜디닌과 코넬리 전통 속의 내러티브 탐구(narrative inquiry)의 존재론적, 방법론적, 그리고 인식론적인 입장을 다루고 있다. 또한 내러티브 탐구 방법을 채용하여 실제 연구를 수행할 때, 이러한 철학적 입장들이 어떻게 반영되어야 하는지를 보여주기 위해 연구퍼즐 설정하기, 현장텍스트 작성하기, 그리고 연구 텍스트 작성하기 등으로 나누어 설명하고 있다. 클랜디닌과 코넬리 전통 속의 내러티브 탐구에서 경험의 의미는 개인이 환경과의 관계성 속에 살아갈 때 그들이 자신의 환경과 연속적이고도 상호작용적인 교변작용 속에서 살며 말하는 경험의 이야기로 이해될 수 있다. 이 점에서 클랜디닌과 코넬리의 전통 속에서 경험을 탐구하고자 하는 내러티브 탐구자는 경험을 이야기적으로 탐구하기 위해 내러티브 탐구방법을 채용한다. 내러티브 탐구자가 참여자의 경험을 이야기적으로 탐구한다는 의미는, 과거, 현재, 미래 시간의 지속성 속에서 살며 말하는 개인 삶의 시간성, 사회적인 맥락과 관계적인 개인 삶의 사회성, 그리고 개인 삶의 위치성을 고려하는 가운데 참여자의 경험을 탐구한다는 의미로 이해될 수 있다. 이와 같이 내러티브 탐구자는 개인이 환경과 연속적이고도 상호작용적 교변작용 속에서 살며 가지는 듀이의 경험의 존재론을 바탕으로 경험을 이야기적 현상으로 이해하며 그러한 경험을 이야기적으로 탐구하는 방법론적인 입장을 통해 지식의 본질에 도달하게 된다. 따라서 내러티브 탐구는 경험에 대해 존재론적 입장과 방법론적인 입장을 동시에 함의하며 이러한 두 가지 입장이 인식론적인 입장을 형성한다. 본 글에서 탐색한 클랜디닌과 코넬리 전통 속의 내러티브 탐구의 철학적 입장과 탐구과정은 그들의 전통 속에서 내러티브 탐구를 수행하고자 하는 연구자에게 탐구과정 상의 지표를 제공해 줄 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper, based on my ontological, methodological, and epistemological stance as a narrative inquirer, I describe how those stances are compatible with my doctoral research, living in the field, composing field texts and composing research texts. In this paper, narrative inquiry entails both a view of experience as a storied phenomenon and as a methodology based on Dewey's conception of experience as a transactional ontological stance that sees a person and his or her environments as being in an ongoing interactive relation. As this ontological stance shapes the methodological stance, methodologically I understand narrative inquiry as the way my participants construct meaning from lived experiences through an ongoing process of living, telling, and inquiring into their stories of the lived experience of who they are in their multiple life contexts in order to reconstruct their past experience and envision their future lives. As both ontological and methodological stance of narrative inquiry shape an epistemological stance, epistemologically the knowledge claims I can make are contingent on the relationships, the temporality, and the place in which I came to know and live in relation with my participants.
