초록

The aim of this study is to explore which phonetic features make a speech more intelligible focusing on the vowel space area. To this end, the vowel space area of announcers and that of college students have been compared. The result of the reading test shows that the vowel space area of the announcers is larger than that of the college students, which means that vowel space area and intelligibility correlate each other. The difference of the vowel realizations between two groups is remarkable in the back vowels. This seems that the longer distance of the announcers between the back vowels is to contrast each vowel more clearly in a relatively dense vowel space. In the intelligible test, participants were asked to evaluate the intelligibility of the speeches that is earned from the reading test on a scale of 1 to 7. The result shows that there was a positive correlation between the vowel space area and the evaluated intelligibility. Yet, not only vowel space area but also other suprasegmental elements seem to affect the intelligibility.
