Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the errors in pronunciation of the syllable-final liquid /ㄹ/ by Myanmarese Learners of Korean and to provide basic data necessary to design a teaching method for the proper pronunciation of the syllable-final /ㄹ/ based on the analysis. In order to find out what kind of pronunciation errors Myanmarese Korean learners made in the pronunciation of the syllable-final /ㄹ/, 6 types of environments were analyzed in this experiment. The highest frequency of pronunciation errors was observed in phonological environments where a coda nasal and a coda liquid /l/ occurred in adjacent syllables. In such contexts, two prominent error patterns were noted: the deletion of the coda liquid /l/ and the substitution of one nasal for another due to confusion in articulatory placement. The next most frequent error pattern was found in monosyllabic words, where /l/ was often deleted or replaced by the nasal /n/. While deletion of /l/ was frequently observed in isolated word pronunciations, the error rate was relatively lower in sentence-level pronunciations. Interestingly, during sentence reading, syllables containing coda /l/ tended to be longer in duration than those produced by native Korean speakers. Errors involving the sequence of coda liquids (/l/) and nasals (/m, n, ŋ/) across adjacent syllables frequently included deletion of /l/ and substitution of the nasal with another nasal produced at a different place of articulation. These patterns appear to result from the syllable structure constraints of Burmese and a tendency toward regressive assimilation. Learners seem to transfer the phonological system of their first language (L1) when pronouncing Korean, indicating a strong influence of L1 that they have not yet overcome.
