Abstract
This study explores the experiences and meanings of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among sexual minorities through narrative inquiry. It investigates how participants reconstruct their experiences of NSSI as sexual minorities within a three-dimensional narrative space of time, society, and place, through their life stories. The study includes stories about the onset of NSSI, experiences of discrimination and self-injury as sexual minorities, their meanings, and narratives about the direction of their current and future lives. The primary research questions are: what are the experiences of NSSI among sexual minorities in Korean society, and what meanings do these experiences hold in personal and environmental contexts? The meanings of NSSI experiences among sexual minorities were identified as “temporary escapes from oppressive environments,” “struggle to protect myself,” and “at the boundary between discrimination and acceptance.” Based on these findings, the study discusses counseling implications in the context of personal justification, practical justification, and social justification, and suggests the significance of this research and directions for future studies.
