Abstract

Many scholars researched the grammatical structure of Modern Mongolian language, however, disagreements remain on the essential nature of some morphemes. One of these, is the morpheme of voice category. Especially, on the nature of these morphemes: Are they inflexional suffixes or derivational suffixes? In order to slove this problem we must study the historical usage and historical development of voice affixes. Through the investigation of the Middle Mongolian texts, the author of this article draws following conclusions:Preclassical Written Mongolian possessed the following voice affixes *-γa/-ge, *-qa/-ke, * -γul/-gl, *-lγa/-lge, *-γda/-gde,*-da/-de, *-ta/-te, -*ldu/-ld,* -lda/-lde and *-la/-le. These affixes are preserved in Modern Mongolian almost intact.Grammatical meaning of the voice morphems in Ancient Mongolian have been maintained, but through the way of historical developments of language, the features of the morphemes have been changed. It depends, the morphemic distribution of voice affixes which come near word root.In Modern Mongolian, the voice affixes are not the same as derivational suffixes and other inflectional suffixes, which is the chracteristics of verbal morphology of the Mongolian languages.I hope that my observations will give a new views on the voice category to the scholars who would like to research Mongolian grammar structure.
