Abstract

This small article, a continuation of the author’s previous series of articles on the pro-words of Mongolian, aims to analyze the functional-semantic features of the xaa-stem interrogative pro-words in modern Khalkha Mongolian. Taking into consideration data from modern literary works, we can determine the following xaa-stem compound forms and analytic constructions: xaa, xaana, xaanax(ïn), xaag, xaanaas, xaaguur, xaaš, xaašdaa, xaašaa, and xaač-. In terms of preliminary observations, xaa-stem compound forms and analytical constructions share certain features with the three different interrogative pro-words yuu-, yaa-, and ali, while still retaining their own peculiarities. The Mongolian interrogative pro-word stems yaa-, yuu-, ali, xaa-, and xe- can all five be conceived of as forming a single subset of Mongolian pro-words, with both internal similarities and unique features.
