Abstract
Since literary works written by African writers in European languages attracted international attention in the second half of twentieth century, many literary critics have been involved in the debate about the use of language in African literature. Some argue that Africans should create literary works in their mother tongues, those are their respective African vernacular languages, while others point out that writing in European languages is a practical choice for African writers. The objective of this study is to discuss the problem of language choice in African literature. To achieve this goal, the language choice of Ngugi wa Thiong'o, an African writer who decided to write creative works only in his mother tongue, the Gikuyu language, is examined in this study. Ngugi wa Thiong'o has emerged as a leading advocate of writing in African vernacular languages since his decision. Ngugi has expressed his view through the language choice. First of all, as a postcolonial writer, he decided to use his mother tongue to resist cultural imperialism of the West. Secondly, Writing in Gikuyu allows him to communicate effectively with Gikuyu peasants and workers who cannot understand English well. Finally, he tries to succeed African oral tradition by using an African vernacular language.
