초록

The main topic of this article is ‘fragile state’ and ‘Zimbabwe.’ As the hike of the Year-on-Year (YoY) inflation rate from 4.83% in July 2018 to over 750% in early 2020 symbolizes, what happened in Zimbabwe from August 2018 demonstrated this Southern African country’s fragile nature, ‘the government cannot deliver core functions to the majority of its people.’ This article describes and analyses how the chain-reaction of political, economic and social vulnerabilities appeared in Zimbabwe from August 2018 in a chronological order. The analysis demonstrated that Zimbabwe as a fragile state was sensitive to outer shocks and that vulnerability in one field was easily transferred to vulnerability in other fields. This paper is believed to be a rare empirical study of fragile state beyond conceptual and theoretical review and is also a rare paper exploring the current situation of Zimbabwe.
