Abstract

]After the WW II German Society was thrown into the deep mental and moral crisis. With the fall of the Hitler Regime and the division of the country by the victorious powers all the traditions and historical achievements of the German nation were placed in doubt. The divided German countries tried to establish the new basis of national identity through the reinterpretation of their historical tradition. It was an endeavor to find a positive memory of the nation which were inevitably accompanied by the conflicts of world and historical views and political interests of various parties. In West Germany there were heated disputes over the German past and the future directions of new republic among the major political parties, CDU, SPD and FDP. The sudden outbreak of people's uprising on 17 June 1953 in East Berlin gave an unexpected impetus for making of founding memory in western republic. The day of uprising was established as a national commemoration for German unification by the initiative of SPD. However this commemoration served as more the instrument of CDU policy of western integration and the anticommunistic line rather strengthening the people's will for the unification.(Kyungpook National University/leor@knu.ac.kr)
