이 연구에서는 가족 기업의 개념과 역사에 관련된 다양한 쟁점들을 정리하고 이탈리아의 사례 연구를 소개한다. 가족 기업은 현대 기업사의 주류 패러다임인 챈들러적 패러다임에 의해 오랫동안 무시되어온 주제였다. 그러나 최근 연구들은 가족 기업이 양적인 면에서나 질적인 면에서 기업사의 예외가 아니라 정상일 수 있음을 보여주고 있다. 또한 “가족의 기업가 역량”이나 “전문 소유주 역량” 등의 새로운 개념들을 통해 가족 기업의 역동성이 부각되고 있다. 특히 이탈리아는 가족 기업의 역동성이 잘 드러나는 흥미로운 무대다. 자원과 자본, 시장을 결여한 이탈리아는 가족을 유력한 수단으로 하여 악조건을 딛고 자본주의적 산업화를 추진했다. 그런 가운데 이탈리아는 가족 기업과 가족 자본주의의 발전에 내재하는 명암을 고루 보여주었는데, 이탈리아의 대표적인 자동차 기업인 피아트의 사례가 그 점을 실증하고 있다. 오늘날 가족 기업은 기업사의 무시된 주제에서 유망한 주제로 바뀌고 있다. 특히 이탈리아의 가족 기업들은 기업사 연구에서 특별히 주목받을 가치가 있는 주제일 것이다.
Abstract
Reconsidering Family Firm: Concept and History Jang, Moon Seok[Abstract]This essay looks into various issues and an Italian case around concept and history of family firm which has long been neglected. This neglect seems to be derived from Chandlerian paradigm as a mainstream paradigm in contemporary business history. But recent studies illustrate that family firm can be a norm, not an exception, in quantitative and qualitative sense. And they shed light on the intrinsic dynamics of family firms, suggesting the new concepts of “family entrepreneurship” or “professional ownership.” Italy is a breeding ground of dynamic family firms. Serious efforts have been made for capitalist industrialization by means of family as a lever of economic growth in this country. In doing so, Italy revealed the light and shadow of family firms and family capitalism, as a case of Fiat, an Italy's largest automobile enterprise, showed well. Nowadays, family firm is changing from an overlooked topic to a prospective topic in business history. And Italian family firms are becoming a topic of business history which merits special attention. (Yeungnam University/storico@ynu.ac.kr)
