Abstract
The subjects of Seamus Heaney’s critical prose are the definition and defense of poetry, and the arguments for the special position of poet in society. His concepts on poetry can be summed up as follows: 1) poetry, which represents the complexities of contrasting aspects of life, can illuminate the darkness, which means the past and the buried consciousness. 2) Thus poetry gives voice to the social reality and embodies the truth inherent in the community with subtle beauty of words. 3) The poet helps the reader realize life’s complexities and serves his community by handing out nature and encouraging life’s power.
