Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the economic activities of the ethnic Chinese in Daegu during the first half of the 20th century. After the Kyongbu Railroal was laid by Japanese in 1904, a few ethnic Chinese started settling down to engage in commerce in Daegu. After immigrating to the area of Daegu, their population sharply increased and they played a great role in the local economy of Daegu. The main economic activities of the ethnic Chinese in Daegu are as follows : (1) As Daegu was located in inland, their immigration to this area was rather later than other areas such as Busan, Mokpo, Gunsan, and Wonsan. However, the ethnic Chinese in Daegu rapidly overtook and exceeded other Korean cities in economy and population. (2) Compared to other areas, the ethnic Chinese in Daegu played a greater role in the sectors of house building and foundry industry. Especially, 'Shuangxinghao'(雙興號), a Chinese house builder, built many buildings of Catholic and Protestant churches in Daegu from 1910s to 1930s. They ran three foundries to make Korean cauldrons and stoves, and supplied exclusively to the local area.
