Abstract

In William Trevor’s Fools of Fortune, the author depicts the ruined lives of people caused by terror and violence due to the Irish War of Independence. This paper traces a trail of destruction of the place, Kilneagh which is major setting of the novel and is imagined as Ireland metonymically. Moreover this paper analyze the dissolution of the owner’s family history as a route to disconnectedness which is paralleled with the destruction of the place as well. Finally, this paper contends that the author suggests the pacifist vision of Irish history, instead of terror and violence which are not justifiable in any case.
