Trees on a Slope mirrors the fact that HWANG Soon-Won was influenced by the traditional apocalyptic concept and its vision which reflected the period of ruin and fall as the transitional period for revival and salvation. HWANG reveals tragic conditions of destruction and death caused by the Korean War by the representation of Jeremiah. He anthropomorphizes the post-war ethnic community as trees on a slope, and portrays the ambilaterality of judgement and salvation through the parable of the vine in the Book of Jeremiah. He focuses on the ambivalent meaning of suffering and salvation as he suggested the possibility of recovery and salvation to the ethnic community in hardships of the fratricidal war. In addition, the attitude of self-sacrifice was connected directly with the salvation of others as well as that of self.
