W. B. Yeats’s Oedipus at Colonus was performed in the Abbey Theatre. This play infuses the ethnic community spirit and the consciousness of Irish independence into the Irish. Moreover, he reflects the Irish colonialist life in Oedipus’s diasporic life, instilling national self-esteem in them. So Oedipus’s painful life holds the mirror up to the Irish life. Oedipus, a king in Thebes, was exiled to Colonus in Athens owing to his past evil karma. He is to purify his past evil karma through diasporic life, rising to the rank of a demigod. His diasporic pilgrimage refines his past karma. He shows what a typical diasporic life is, through dialogues with Antigone, Ismene, Theseus, and Creon. Oedipus’s life helps us ruminate on what upright life we should live as a human to complete the ultimate reality.
