Abstract
Alice Childless has been celebrated as the first pioneering playwright who directed the Negro Theater from black people’s own point of view. Through all her plays, she expressed her view of the racial and gender discrimination from the black woman playwright’s stance. In addition to criticizing sexual, prejudicial discrimination of both white and black men, she also raised her voice against white women who hid their faces under the name of racial egalitarianism. In the mid-stage of her career as a playwright, she even criticized high and middle class black women who regarded common black women with condescension. Alice Childress’s two plays, Florence and The Wedding Band are good examples that can be analyzed from the intersectionality theory and the black feminism even though her works were published in the 1900s.
